I am profoundly affected by my environment – always have been. If it is rainy and gloomy for days at a time, I become gloomy too. When it’s bright and sunshiny out, I feel sunshiny too.  Autumn on the east coast is probably my favorite time of year. There’s something so amazing about seeing the riot of color, the blaze of the leaves in defiance of impending death. There’s something different about the sunsets too……it’s like God, the Master Painter, is busy creating temporary works of art.

As affected as I am by my environment, I am not a nature photographer. I see and am affected by the beauty around me, but I am generally not moved to pick up my camera (I don’t know why). I am more compelled to capture people, not things. But a couple of days ago, I was in my kitchen, cleaning up after dinner, when I looked out the window and saw this:

Sunset

My hands started shaking and I RAN to get my camera. I knew I had to get the shot NOW before it went away. This sunset only lasted for a very few minutes before it was gone, but it was enough.

This photo shoot was originally scheduled for last Friday, when it was in the 70s outside, but the rain came and wouldn’t go away, so we had to reschedule. We chose today, no matter what the weather was, and wow, was it COLD! Tim, Jaye and little Cadence did great, though, and you can’t tell from the pictures that it was absolutely FREEZING.  The light was perfect and the Hughes are a beautiful family, so the combination was magic!

It’s that time of year! Everyone is starting to gear up for the holiday gift-giving season and your photos make the best gifts for grandparents and long-distance relatives. The order deadline given to me by Collages.net is December 10. So, if you would like to receive your prints before Christmas, December 10 is the last day you can place an order. For those of you who would like to order a CD of your photo session, please let me know by December 18.

I’ve been putting the finishing touches on the Orows’ holiday portraits tonight and I’ve fallen in love with a few black-and-whites:

And last, we did a series where each of them held a “Christmas word” such as hope, peace and love. Here’s a sweet one of the parents:

Yesterday I had the pleasure of working with Raquel and her family. Raquel and I had been emailing/talking on the phone with each other for a few weeks to set up their family session and we were both so excited! She had a million ideas (see the elf photos below), I had a million ideas…..and we were totally on the same page. Once again, I came to a photo shoot loaded up with props stuffed in our old stroller. If they thought I was crazy, then they were kind enough not to say so! Raquel, I hope when you see your photos, you will feel it was all worth it!

Raquel’s husband, John, stayed so calm through the whole experience even though he was dealing with two crazy women intent on getting the best photos ever! Little Alaina was super – smiled the whole time and went along with all the costume changes. She informed me, “Sometimes I’m cute and sometimes I’m pretty.” My heart melted the first time I saw little Jacob……so sweet! And, so much a two year old boy – constantly in motion! He seemed intent on doing whatever we didn’t want him to do! I think his parents were worried about getting some good shots, but I was happy to see that we got lots!

Yesterday we had two sessions back to back for two sisters and their four kids. We started out in downtown Aberdeen on the railroad tracks and feed store with Kellie and her sons Dylan and Andrew and then headed over to the park, where we met sister Leigh-Anne and her children Lauren and Trevor. They all did so great and I tried to capture their unique personalities. Moms Kellie and Leigh-Anne were great – so kind and Southern! Made me miss my own sister!

The boys were so very cute. I kept exclaiming, “You guys are SO CUTE!”, which did not impress the boys. They would look at me like, “Lady, you are crazy.” Lauren is a UNC fan and so grown up. Below are some of my favorites so far, but I’ve still got lots of editing work to do, so I’m sure I’ll be posting more later!
